The Metamorphosis of Drag Storytime
There has been a evolution. Drag Queen Storytime started with the Elgin County Library, the Middlesex County Library, St.Thomas Public Library and 3 Drag Queens, Miss Lita, Miss Shaneen and Mz Affra Tighty. These 3 Queens would go to the libraries to sing songs and read stories that were chosen by library staff. The first Drag Queen Storytime was in May 2019 at the Parkhill Library. From May 2019 to January 2020, the Storytellers went to 16 different locations in Elgin, Huron, Lambton, Middlesex, Perth and Oxford Counties. Over 1000 children, parents/caregivers attended these storytimes.
Then Covid-19 closed the libraries and Drag Queen Storytime came to a grinding halt. So, the Drag Queens came together reaching out to their friends and virtual Drag Queen Storytimes were born. Six Drag Queens were taped singing songs and reading stories.
To be more inclusive, the name changed to Drag Storytime when two Drag Kings were added to the mix in the fall of 2020. Also, joining the mix in the fall of 2020 was Oxford County Library. in early Spring of 2021 Woodstock Public Library joined the partnership and Drag Storytime continues to grow and evolve.
In January 2022 three new storytellers, a Drag King and 2 Drag Queens, joined Drag Storytime.
Since going virtual in June 2020 over 100 Drag Storytimes have been produced with over 100,000 views on Facebook and Youtube.
Drag Storytime has evolved yet again. In June 2022 the Drag Storytellers started up in-person Storytimes again, reading in the libraries and at Pride events. In September 2022 Drag Storytime went virtual again but continues in-person.
Currently, Drag Storytime is virtual once a month and the libraries and Pride organizations are hosting in-person Drag Storytime.
